Make hash

This recipe for making hash has been waiting for you for a while. I already photographed this sign for you last March. So I could publish the recipe in October during my maternity leave. Apparently something went wrong there, because the recipe had not yet been published. Since it is still winter at the end of January, this hash recipe is still useful now.

Hachee – basic recipe

Hash. In other words, stew with onion gravy. This used to be my favorite dish in the winter. When my mother made it we ate it with red cabbage, and I still do that now. As far as I'm concerned, this delicious stew with red cabbage is a perfect combination. I don't use my mother's hash recipe one-to-one. I don't use packets and add extras to make hash even tastier.

Hachee recipe

The basis for making hash is stew meat with onion rings. I use beef rib steaks for the stew. The secret of my basic recipe is adding a spoonful of caster sugar, soy sauce and apple syrup. And of course bay leaves cannot be missing from this recipe. By adding these seasonings it becomes a spicy stew full of flavor. A little sweet, and very tasty.

Delicious gravy

And the secret for the tastiest, slightly thickened gravy? As far as I'm concerned, that means adding a slice of crumbled gingerbread. At the end, briefly heat the gingerbread together with the hash. This melts the cake and makes the gravy a bit thicker and more bound.

Hachee from the slow cooker

When I published this recipe last year I didn't have one yetslow cooker, so I prepared this dish in a regular onestewpan. But of course you can also prepare it in the slow cooker! Then do not put butter in the pan and omit the stock. Add 2 beef stock cubes, plus 350 ml water. First set the slow cooker to high for 1 hour, and then to low for 6 to 7 hours. Then the meat becomes wonderfully tender and you have a delicious stew on the table.

Delicious!!! 9 hours in the slow cooker on low. I didn't use gingerbread, apple syrup and brown caster sugar. I personally think it's way too sweet. And added a little more water.

Delicious!

The amount of water is really too little. In my case it was boiled dry and partly burned. I added another liter and before the 3 hours were up it was almost boiled dry again. It's on the lowest burner on the lowest heat...

Oh this one is so delicious, I don't dare make another one, it can only be disappointing. When I have dinner, this is often on the table and people always ask for the recipe :)

Dear Brenda, We love it and make it once every 2 weeks. If there is vinegar in it, it is sour meat and no longer hash. DELICIOUS

I disagree with you. Old-fashioned hash "should" contain pickle in the form of a little vinegar. Pickled meat, as the name suggests, contains much more vinegar.

Dear Brenda, I just tried your recipe, but I found it very sweet. So I added 5 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and some cloves. Greetings, Katrin

Dear Brenda, Isn't your recipe missing vinegar? I made it as described above and upon tasting it turned out to be very sweet. Other recipes on the internet always mention vinegar among the ingredients. Kind regards,Katrin

Wow, this recipe is so delicious! I first put it on meat/stew as indicated, and then after it was ready, I released the pressure and boiled it down further, then I added red cabbage at the end and this was certainly 10/10, this is what we are going to do now. make this often, especially this recipe!

Hi Brenda, could you perhaps be a little more specific with your tip for preparation in the slow cooker? What do you mean: don't put butter in the pan? Not when searing (I don't think this is possible)? Kind regards, Ans van Aalst

It's not entirely clear to me either. Unfortunately, I did not read an answer from Brenda. So I put everything in the frying pan. Too bad because the slow cooker is so easy. Maybe you would like to answer this Brenda? Thank you in advance.

Hi Brenda, I want to prepare the recipe of the week in the slow cooker. Can you answer the above question? Do you put the meat raw in the slow cooker?

Hachee - basic recipe (24)

Mar

Yes, I wondered that too...but I think the meat goes raw in the slow cooker? I finally made it in a casserole, it was delicious with homemade mashed potatoes and red cabbage with apples :)
